Autumn Fall Fashion

Autumn has not always been my favourite season – and that may have something to do with being born and raised on the island of Ireland and not having much of a transition period between the wet summer to the dreary winter. However the last few years I have looked more and more forward to autumn and that has only intensified since moving to Canada. It is a much awaited season as the temperature gradually comes to a cool from the summer heat and you can practically smell the sweet chill of pumpkin and crisp sunburnt leaves. Thanksgiving is celebrated in Canada on the second Monday of October and you are not short of options when it comes to pumpkin patches, hayrides, corn mazes and apple picking. This past weekend was known as ‘peak weekend’ in Toronto, Ontario when the leaves are at their most intense in colour before finally falling and I could not contain my excitement to get out into the city and enjoy the last of some sunshine for the next six months. There are three main reasons autumn has become my favourite season: pumpkin spice everything, the leaves changing colour and fashion.

Fashion has always been something I’m good at. I didn’t study it or take up a design course but I just got it – as the saying goes ‘I didn’t spend all that time in the closet doing nothing.’ The entire fashion industry goes into overdrive as soon as August draws to a close for designers to debut their new collection and stores fill with an endless range of deeper, muted tones. Knitwear comes back in style and a wide selection of accessories for layering becomes available to help you bundle up and keep warm.

A coat is an essential part of our wardrobe, and for some more than others depending on where you live, but that does not mean you can not find a coat that matches your style and have fun with. This stunning brown wind-breaker coat from Zara is inspired by aviation of the past with faux leather fabric and a faux fur interior. The double collar and turned-up cuffs and tab details on the sleeves add a vintage touch while keeping it highly in season and feeling extremely luxurious and warm.

Layering season teams so well with knit-wear. This incredibly soft, comfortable and warm Cabin Shawl cardigan is from Roots Canada. This is made from their heritage wool-blend cabin yarn and the shawl collar can be buttoned for additional warmth on colder days which is getting closer and closer as the days grow shorter. Roots was founded in Toronto in 1973 and inspired by the nearby wilderness of the Algonquin Provincial Park. This is the true touch of Canada everyone needs in their fall wardrobe.

These photographs were taken not far from the Algonquin Provincial Park that originally inspired the Roots founders and you can easily see where the inspiration came from. This incredibly soft yet durable park plaid shirt is made using the Roots signature cotton flannel and features corduroy elbow patches. The cabin red colour makes it just as at home in the cabin as it does in the city life of downtown Toronto. A true touch of Canada that can easily be used to dress up any look and equally dress down a style.

The ultimate choice of comfort is a day spent in sweats. Not usually a go to for myself personally but I could not resist picking these up from Roots for my trip to Northern Ontario. The quality of this hoodie and sweatpants combo are phenomenal and have an amazing amount of weight and warmth. The front pouch is an excellent size and holds your belongings well. The stitch work of this ultra-soft fleece is incredible and the iconic Cooper Beaver logo is the perfect size and holds up well in the washing machine.

Autumn is the perfect season creating a sense of comfort, warmth and reflection and there is no better way to do just that than looking and feeling amazing. While you may choose to expand your fall wardrobe and add signature pieces this is the perfect time of year to sort and organize and begin donating or binning any unused items you may have.
