DECIEM is the umbrella company that operate The Ordinary and countless other beauty brands. While there is several different brands under the one name, the principal remains the same: provide outstanding skin care at an affordable price. The ever growing list of products available is made of the highest standard in quality, remaining as authentic as the brand and functional: it does everything it says on the package.
I arrived in Canada seven weeks ago – adjusting to a new climate, time zone, weather system, food and diet, humidity, water, beauty products and brands, sleep pattern and work load (to name a few…) it came as no shock when my skin became the first to suffer as a result of the major change happening.
Initial changes were gradual and took time to appear: obsessive oil being produced from my pores especially around my T-Zone, fine lines and darker circles appeared around my under eye area. With the change in humidity and the weather my skin began to sweat more and often became trapped on my forehead where my fringe was – causing small under the surface pimples to appear. Lastly the water is a little harsher here than it is back home and it caused my skin to become dry and flaky and my sleep pattern ultimately suffered so badly I had visible eye bags and extremely dark circles.
I have used one product in particular from The Ordinary for the past two years but have never ventured any further until I arrived in Toronto, I have now taken the time to explore other products and have enough knowledge about each to write this review. If it can help my skin at its most crucial time I have faith this brand can help anyone.
(Sold as part of The No-Brainer Set.) Apply to the entire face AM and PM after cleansing.
The No-Brainer Set is an all round brilliant introduction to the brand and offers a versatile range of products committed to fighting signs of ageing, visible texture irregularities and look of fine lines and wrinkles. The Buffet is a play on alternative, more expensive brands combining ingredients to target ‘multiple problem areas.’ Instead The Ordinary have packed nothing but active ingredients into this to target multiple signs of ageing at once. My motto when it comes to skin care continues to be: prevention is better than a cure. I instantly noticed the fine lines around my eye area to improve. With continued notice I can see this product fight my corner and only prevent fine lines from appearing.
NIACINAMIDE 10% + ZINC 1%
Apply to the entire face AM and PM before heavier creams.
I was advised in store this product could help with the appearance of enlarged pores. I must confess I did struggle with this product in the beginning – so let me tell you that less is more. A pea sized amount is more than enough starting at the T-Zone and working to the outer portions of the face. Initially I noticed the redness in my face had improved and imperfections – including those under the surface pimples were gone practically overnight. This has become a staple in my skin care routine and used straight after the buffet. A very slight sting is felt when the product is first applied and quickly goes. Only a good sign of the product taking effect and getting to work.
GRANACTIVE RETINOID 2% EMULSION
(Sold as part of The No-Brainer Set.) Apply a small amount to the face in PM after water serums but before heavier creams.
The Ordinary has recently extended their retinoid portfolio to meet the demand of its customers and with so has renamed this product to match the range. The Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion uses advanced next-generation technology which has proven to achieve better reduction in signs of ageing than non-prescription retinol. With continued use you will notice a reduction of acne breakouts by preventing dead skin cells from clogging the pores. Due to this retinoid can also allow other medicated creams and gels to penetrate the skin and work better. Retinoid use can also help with the appearance of sun damaged skin.
**Retinoid makes the skin more sensitive to sun exposure and can cause immediate sun burn or leave you subject to develop sun damaged skin in later years. UV protection is advised. It is recommended to avoid retinoid in your skin care regime if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.**
NATURAL MOISTURISING FACTORS
(Sold as part of The No-Brainer Set.) Apply to the entire face as needed for effective surface hydration.
Made up of Natural Moisturising Factors that are naturally present in the skin (such as amino acids, fatty acids and hyaluronic acid) these are elements that keep the outer layer of the skin protected and well-hydrated. Your skin feels immediately hydrated and replenished – especially in warmer climates. With continued use your skin appears bright and fresh. It is worth noting the Granactive Retinoid treatment on its own can cause the skin to become rather dry so it is recommended to use a high quality moisturiser on top to lock in moisture and hydration.
MINERAL UV FILTERS SPF 30
Apply to face liberally and evenly 20 minutes before UV exposure.
Mineral UV Filters offer SPF protection along with antioxidant, hydration and anti-irritant support. The antioxidant network minimizes the intensity of UV radiation penetrating the skin and supports the skin response to the exposure. Pepperberry is an active ingredient that helps to calm stressed skin and begins to act almost instantly. A unique blend of molecules provide both short and long term hydration to the skin and also naturally increases the skins ability to hold water.
AHA 30% + BHA 2% PEELING SOLUTION
(Currently not available in Canada.) Apply to the face avoiding the eye crease no more than once a week.
AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) exfoliates the skins top surface for a brighter and more even appearance.
BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) has an extended function to help clear pore congestion, fight blemishes and improve skin radiance.
This formula is a very high concentration of free acids and should be used with caution. Do not use on broken or sensitive skin. Thankfully I have much of this product remaining from a Christmas present and was sure to pack it with me when I was coming to Canada. Once this product is initially applied to the skin there is an immediate sting – which eventually fades. It is not recommended to be applied for any longer than ten minutes. Once you rinse and remove the product it is important to take immediate care and restore moisture. Skin can appear slightly reddened for the next day or two but after you will notice an improvement to overall texture and tone.
